The Role of Parenting in Junior Tennis Development

Supporting a competitive junior tennis athlete is one of the most rewarding and challenging journeys a parent can undertake. Tennis is a unique sport—it is completely individual, with no teammates to rely on and no coaches allowed to talk to the players during standard USTA matches. This high-pressure environment is an incredible tool for developing character, but only when parents support their child in the right way.

Under Coach Ken Olivier’s direction, we emphasize that junior development is a tripartite relationship: the player, the coach, and the family. If any of these three pillars are out of alignment, progression slows down.

1. Focus on Effort, Not Outcomes

The single most important habit a tennis parent can build is praising work ethic, focus, and sportsmanship over whether the child won or lost the match. When a child feels that their parents’ support is tied strictly to winning, they develop severe performance anxiety. Try asking these questions on the car ride home:

  • Did you give 100% effort today?
  • Did you handle tight situations with composure?
  • What did you learn from the opponent’s strategy today?

2. Respect the Training Process

We build long-term athletic development plans for our competitive players. These plans are written down, posted, and updated regularly. If a coach introduces a grip modification or a stance correction, it might cause the player’s results to dip temporarily in matches while they adjust. We ask parents to be patient and trust the process—consistency in coaching yields consistency in results.

3. Keep Tennis in Perspective

While we target collegiate scholarship pathways and competitive UTR goals, tennis is ultimately a vehicle to build lifetime character. Honesty in scoring, respect for the opponent, and handling failure constructively are the values that will guide your child to success long after they play their last match.

We encourage all academy parents to communicate openly with us via the CoachNow app, where we store match notes, videos, and targets. Together, we can guide your child through a successful and enjoyable tennis journey.
