Evaluating Your Child’s Stride & Swing Mechanics

As junior tennis players grow and progress, biomechanical efficiency becomes the key differentiator between those who plateau and those who reach collegiate levels. During my 25+ years of player development, I have observed that many mechanical issues are not lack of talent, but rather improper kinetic chain setups.

Tennis is a ground-up sport. Every stroke—whether a heavy topspin forehand or an explosive serve—starts from foot placement and forces transferred through the ankles, knees, hips, and trunk, before finally accelerating the racquet face.

1. The Foundation: Stride & Setup

Many junior players attempt to swing using only their upper body because their feet are not placed correctly. An efficient forehand setup requires:

  • The Split Step: An active jump just as the opponent makes contact, preparing the player to push off in any direction.
  • Unit Turn: Coiling the hips and shoulders together rather than just pulling the arm back. This stores elastic energy in the core muscles.
  • Open vs. Neutral Stance: Training players to load the outside leg when running wide, and stepping forward when stepping into short balls.

2. The Contact Point & Wrist Snap

A common error is making contact behind the body. This places severe strain on the wrist and shoulder muscles, leading to early fatigue. We emphasize catching the ball out in front of the front hip. Additionally, we check grip sizes regularly—a grip that is too thick prevents wrist snapping, which limits topspin production.
